Unhabit

Habits don’t break.
They drift.

You cut back. A rough week, an extra cup. A month later you’re right back where you started — and nobody was counting. Unhabit counts, and every Sunday shows you what’s pulling you back.

Why it works when nothing else did

One habit,
week by week.

Other habit apps need you to never miss. Unhabit expects you to — and turns every miss into the answer. Here’s one habit — coffee — through Sam’s first eight weeks.

Sam is a demo account, built from the founder’s own coffee habit with the details changed.

  1. Week 1

    Count it. Don’t fight it.

Sam had tried to quit coffee for years. It never lasted more than a few days. This time, no cold turkey — just a promise of at most four cups a day, and the real number, every day.

“Thursdays are always the worst.”— Sam, week 1

  2. Week 2

    Thursdays kept coming back.

Three a day held — except Thursday, again. Looking back over the week on Sunday, Sam saw why: both bad days came the morning after a late Wednesday.

“Thursday again. Late Wednesday again.”— Sam, week 2

  3. Week 3

    Down to two.

Two a day, and most days it held. The two days it didn’t, it was the same cup both times — the one at 3pm.

“Three. The 3pm one is the one I always want.”— Sam, week 3

  4. Week 4

    It wasn’t the caffeine.

Sam worked out what the 3pm cup really was: a break. So Sam took the break without the coffee — and every day of week four held.

“Swapped the 3pm cup for a walk around the block. Mostly worked.”— Sam, week 4

  5. Week 5

    Then change the habit itself.

Sam evolved it: green tea instead of coffee. The first two days, it didn’t take. Then it did.

“Still did coffee.” “Still did coffee.” “First day. No coffee at all.”— Sam, three days in a row

  6. Week 6

    Coffee only on weekends.

Green tea on weekdays, and a cup of coffee on Saturday and Sunday — on purpose, because Sam actually liked it then. And the afternoons felt different.

“Answered a call I’d normally have dodged. Less wired. Maybe it is the green tea.”— Sam, week 6

  7. Week 7

    Thursday stopped being Thursday.

No late Wednesdays for three weeks, and the day that used to need the most coffee went by without a thought.

“Thursday, and I didn’t even think about coffee.”— Sam, week 7

  8. Week 8

    Then let it go.

Nothing left to fight. Sam graduated the habit and stopped tracking it.

“It’s just how I drink now.”— Sam, the day it graduated

  9. Months later

    Then a trip.

Two weeks away, coffee every morning, and Sam stopped logging. Back home, the old habit came home too.

  10. Back home

    Sam noticed within days.

Two strong cups, and that same jittery “too fast” feeling from the bad Thursdays. Sam knew it straight away — and made the promise again that week.

“Maybe it’s time to go back to green tea.”— Sam, that night

Every turn in Sam’s eight weeks came from a note Sam wrote —
read back at the right moment.

That’s the Tower.

It’s the part of Unhabit that reads everything you log and write — every night, every week, every month — and tells you what it sees.

It’s called the Tower because the higher you go, the more you see. Think of a shape pressed into a cornfield: from the ground, a few bent stalks. From above, the whole circle. The longer it reads, the higher it gets.

Here’s what the Tower actually wrote about Sam’s coffee — at three heights.

A day

It noticed what Thursday was about.

“Wednesday’s late coffee doesn’t just register on Wednesday; it shows up the next afternoon as that particular flavor of jittery-but-not-awake.”Thursday, Aug 13

What the Tower read

  • Wed Aug 12 · 11:50pm journalLate one again. Wednesdays are when everything ships.
  • Thu Aug 13 · 4:05pm journalThursday afternoon I feel “too fast” — jittery, can’t focus, but not awake either.
  • Thu Aug 13 · 9:30pm 4 cupsThursday again. Late Wednesday again.

A week

It connected the days.

“Wednesday is load, late coffee follows load, Thursday is the receipt. You’ve now logged both ends of that chain enough times that the map is finished.”Week of Aug 9

What the Tower read

  • Sun Aug 9 · 8:30pm journalWeek one: over on two days, both the morning after a late night. Going to three next week.
  • Wed Aug 12 · 11:50pm journalLate one again. Wednesdays are when everything ships.
  • Thu Aug 13 · 4:05pm journalThursday afternoon I feel “too fast” — jittery, can’t focus, but not awake either.
  • Thu Aug 13 · 9:30pm 4 cupsThursday again. Late Wednesday again.

A month

It showed the change taking hold.

“By the fourth week the experiment had quietly resolved into a new baseline — two cups on Thursday, felt normal, a surprised ‘huh’ that the invoice hadn’t arrived.”August

What the Tower read

  • Thu Aug 6 · 9:30pm 5 cupsThursday. Up till 1 shipping last night, so five today.
  • Thu Aug 20 · 3:40pm journalThird cup at 3pm. Same “too fast” feeling. It is always after a late Wednesday.
  • Wed Aug 26 · 10:15pm journalLeft at 10 on Wednesday for once. Asked someone else to watch the deploy.
  • Thu Aug 27 · 2:30pm journalThursday on two cups and felt normal. Huh.

Real Tower output, generated from Sam’s logs and notes. It only speaks from what you wrote — no advice, no judgment. Part of your 30-day trial.
